Logits are the raw scores the model produces before anything is turned into a probability.
There is one logit per token in the vocabulary, at every position.
With a 100,000-token vocabulary that is 100,000 numbers for a single next-token decision.
They are unnormalised, so they can be negative, and they do not sum to anything in particular.
Only the differences between them matter, since adding a constant to all changes nothing.
A higher logit means the model finds that token more plausible here.
Softmax converts them into probabilities that are positive and sum to one.
Temperature is applied to the logits before that conversion.
Dividing by a low temperature spreads the scores apart and sharpens the result.
Dividing by a high temperature pulls them together and flattens it.
Logit bias lets you add a fixed amount to particular tokens to encourage or forbid them.
Setting a large negative bias is how a token is banned outright.
Structured output enforcement works here, by masking every token the schema disallows.
The gap between the top two logits is a rough signal of how confident the model is.
It is a signal about wording, not about truth, so it is a weak guide to correctness.
